Niet de allereerste verfilming van het klassieke Dickens verhaal (de oudste was een stille film uit 1901), maar zeker een klassieker. De donkere, koude sfeer in combinatie met de gebrekkige visuele effecten die men in de jaren ’50 tot hun beschikking had, neemt je mee naar een tijd waarin kerstfilms nog morele sprookjes waren, niet high budget romcoms.
It’s not the first Dickens adaptation, but it’s the one that sticks. The film’s chilly atmosphere and practical 1950s effects give it a rough charm modern versions often smooth over. It’s a Christmas film that doesn’t assume you’re already in a good mood- it earns it.

BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974)
Dit is de basis voor veel conventies die later het slasher genre zouden maken. Het gaat over een studentenhuis voor vrouwen die samen kerst vieren maar last krijgen van een hijger. De constante telefoontjes waarin slechts wordt gehijgd aan de andere kant van de lijn, slaan al snel over in een belaging van het studentenhuis en een bloederige kerst voor de onwetende meiden.
One of the quiet ancestors of the modern slasher. Long before masked killers and elaborate set pieces, this film understood that the scariest thing can be a voice you can’t place. It’s a slow, unsettling descent into dread, set in a house that feels both familiar and suddenly unsafe. A holiday classic for people who secretly like their Christmas a little crooked.

Yes, we think it’s a Christmas movie. Mostly because it refuses to behave like one. What makes Die Hard great isn’t the plot summary (a cop at the wrong Christmas party at the wrong time), but the rhythm, the cat&mouse pacing, the clever reversals, the way John McClane keeps pushing forward even when he definitely shouldn’t... It’s a holiday film for anyone who prefers tension over tinsel.
