Sound is not just audible, but also visible. As a listener, water is a body that receives, reflects and holds the shape of sound. Placed close to a sound source resonates in dynamic, unexpected patterns. It becomes a mirror of frequency, a responsive skin and fluid memory. In some traditions, water is said to remember, symbolically retaining the emotional imprint of words or music.
The Shape of an Echo is an interactive installation, created by musician and physicist Simon Stuij. It consists of sound resonating water bowls, projected images and a chair for a musician or sound-artist. The performer interacts with their own sound in a different way; as it materializes in front of them as poetically distorted images, they can play with water and light in real time, reshaping memories.
Daniël is a composer, bassist, and producer. He made a name for himself with his band FAST DE and played as a bassist in numerous Dutch jazz and rock formations. In 2023 he released the solo album ‘Songs for Paul’, which was recorded in the Antonius van Paduakerk, the place where his father’s funeral took place. In his father’s final weeks, Daniël regularly played bass guitar next to his bed. During this period, and in the months that followed, 11 new compositions for bass guitar emerged. Eventually, Daniël returned to the Paduakerk to record the music together with producer Simon Akkermans. The result is an album full of atmospheric bass guitar songs; a unique combination of deep bass tones, calm melodies, mystical harmonies and a lot of reverb.
Daniël performs his solo songs in conversation with The Shape of an Echo.
