Anyone who’s familiar with the punk movement, will agree that its fame and infamy started with the rise of the Sex Pistols. This band of dirty rascals were raised from the London working class and changed the future of rock music forever, giving room to new genres like heavy metal, wave, gothic, hardcore and more.
If their album “Never Mind the Bollocks” is the musical highlight of the punk movement, then this movie is surely the cinematic highlight of punk.
Although a very controversial movie, which has been criticized by many people who were close to the band and the movement, it’s undeniably the most interesting and thought provoking cinematic work ever inspired by the punk movement.
In short, the movie’s plot follows the rise and downfall of The Sex Pistols, but told from the (very subjective) view of their manager Malcolm McLaren. The main idea behind the film is that Mc Laren created and used the band to forward his own ideas, which were mainly to create chaos within society and rebel against the establishment. As this was ( and for a lot of people still is) the main idea behind punk, I think this movie is extremely reflective for the thoughts, ideas and general feel of the 70’s punk movement.
More importantly, this movie is a creative masterpiece in my opinion. Obviously it features a lot of punkrock music, but this is mixed with weird animation, artsy theatre and many outrages scenes, mostly featuring the infamous drug addict bass player of the Pistols, Sid Vicious. One example is seeing Sid dancing around with swazika underwear. In short, this movie is a testament to the punk movement of the 70’s and even if it’s not your musical taste, still a very interesting and wild ride...
