Asiye Nasıl Kurtulur?
Atıf Yılmaz 1986
Cinema Lux Alterna introduces you to a gem of Turkish 80’s cinema, one of the highlights of acclaimed Turkish director Atıf Yılmaz’s (1925–2006), who remains one of the most distinctive and intriguing figures in Turkish cinema.
Asiye Nasıl Kurtulur or 'How will Asiye be saved' is a strange mix of black comedy, musical, social commentary, blended with surrealist elements. Do not expect typical Yeşilçam (classic Turkish cinema wave from 70’s) entertainment here. This film confronts very real social issues of its time and explores themes such as gender roles, class inequality, moral hypocrisy, and social pressure, as well as the illusion of 'saving' women within a patriarchal system. It reflects on survival and how much control someone really has over their own life in a society that constantly tries to define and control women’s lives. Prostitution is only one layer, what the film really exposes is a broader system of double standards and quiet violence; all delivered with sharp wit and dark humor.
The film is rarely screened anywhere today, including on Turkish television, do not miss this exceptionally rare opportunity to experience it!
