For this movie night we’ll show a real horror classic and one of our personal favourites. Calling this movie a horror doesn’t do it justice though; this is a masterpiece of surrealism, made by the Canadian director David Cronenburg 'The Baron of Blood'. Like in many of his movies, this movie is all about the subconscious and surreal experiences. In fact Cronenberg is among those few directors that base their scripts on dreams, which makes the story much more of a travel through the subconscious than just a linear kind of plot.
This movie takes us back to the 80’s during the peek of the so-called “video era”, when television was still a mighty medium and internet just a vague concept used by the U.S. military. We follow the main character in a voyage through the 80’s world of video, television and pornography in his quest for truth, sexual exploration, fascination and ultimately his transgression into something greater: THE VIDEO WORD MADE FLESH!
Sounds far off to you now, but once you get sucked into this movie and its imagery, it won’t ever let you go and it will haunt you for the rest of your mighty life. Sidenote: this movie features Deborah Harry, the singer of Blondie. Her performance in this film is twisted, sensual and unforgettable.
So, if you are not put off by some gore, BDSM and cheap erotica and you are ready to transgress the borders of mainstream cinema, then join us in this journey beyond reality…
